Narcissus, Nemesis of the Community

There was an interesting article in the New York Times published yesterday by John Tierney. Apparently, according to an analysis of popular song lyrics from the last few years, people are getting more narcissistic.

Doings

Lots of events going on in the world of Jane and Scott. We’ll be playing a sort set at Bread again as part of Breadstock on April 15th – hopefully the info is on the show page. We’ve also got a gig scheduled in June at Java Monkey.

We’re skipping May because. . .wait for it. . .I am rapidly approaching graduation from law school! Nothing stands between me and that hallowed ceremony but four weeks, sixty pages of research paper(s), two tests and massive case of apathy.

Today, instead of plowing through any of that research, I hung a door between the kitchen and Scott’s office and went to see Jane Eyre. (Which was really beautiful. Especially if you can get on board with strong women who still love assy men. And I can. Especially if the men look like Michael Fassbender.)

Finally, a teaser. I am in very early negotiations with these noisemakers about some collaboration. Don’t know what will happen, but I’m kind of excited.

Fear and Loving in the Attic

You would think that after four years in Decatur, even more years at open mics on both coasts, and a solid year of playing entire gigs on the bass, that I would stop being terrified at Eddie’s Open Mic.

I’m not.  I’m going to come right out and admit it. Read the rest of this entry »

Talkin’ Bout Last Night

We have had a few gigs that were significant for their wetness.  Interestingly enough, the ones that come to mind first were not in our original rain soaked metropolis, but here in Atlanta.  The worst was probably the night we played at 10 High. . .while the entire city was being soaked by a rainstorm that spun off of a hurricane on the coast.  That was pretty awesome.   Read the rest of this entry »

Princess Debutante Rock WTF?!

We received our “Musician’s Friend” catalogue in the mail today.  In spite of the fact that I a.) have no money and b.) don’t need more gear, I had to look through it.  Whereupon I came upon this little nugget of cultural illustration.

I just . . .cringe.  I mean, on one hand, I’m delighted that the gear heads have finally decided there is actually a market for girls who want be rockers.  But, why oh why does that translate into brilliant a pink, tacky ass combo with a name that highlights several hundred years of female subjugation?  My perturbation did not decrease when, in order to make sure my list was accurate, I googled “great women guitarists in rock”.   This sight came up first.  Because apparently sexy is still more important than great.

Why are we marketing “Daisy Rock Debutante Princess”?  Haven’t women and men in rock been all about throwing off societal expectations since Woodstock?  What about a Joni Combo?  The Ani?  The Bonnie Raitt?  The fucking Janis??!

Surprise show at Smith’s!

The Jane and Scott Show will be playing for the GSU College of Law Welcome Back Party at Smith’s Olde Bar this Thursday (that would be tomorrow 1/20/11)!  Come out!

Also, in spite of the week of light snowfall that nonetheless paralyzed Atlanta, school has finally started for me, Scott is back at work, and the dogs have reclaimed the furniture.  A few new songs are in the works, a few new shows are on the schedule, and we may have a surprise in store.  I’m not going to say more about that since I tend to jinx myself on these things.  But, as they say, stay tuned.

Analyze That

I had a weird ass, Gaiman-esque, visit-from-the-hoodoos kind of dream last night.  It seemed like the kind of dream to write down, and since it doesn’t really fit under the umbrella of land use and the environment, I thought I’d put it here.  Analyze away. Read the rest of this entry »

Soulstice, Shut-ins, and my Socks

The Jane and Scott show left the house last Saturday!  Winter Soulstice, the annual fund raiser for wonderroot happened again and we got to be part of it as an acoustic act in the Atlanta Room at Smith’s Olde Bar.

Totally fun. Read the rest of this entry »

Updates and Next Steps

We are endeavoring to move forward with the next section of our lives, but for those of you who read this blog with any regularity – or at least as much regularity as I’ve been posting recently – here’s the totally unfair/bad mojo series of events:

Pogo, the big gray dog – lost to cancer in October at the age of 9.

Rox, the little black mop dog – lost to cancer in November at the age of 6.

Maggie, the pack puppy . . .wait for it. . .has to go to the effing doggie E.R. on Thanksgiving!!  She managed to impale herself on a stick when we were up in the mountains.  She is ok – after a frightening, bumpy drive down gravel roads to find the nearest emergency vet open on Thanksgiving and a lot of stitches.

I mean. . .seriously?  By the time Maggie got hurt, I just stopped telling people what was going on, because it’s freaking unbelievable, right?

She is now acting like nothing is wrong (she’s supposed to be on bedrest, but she isn’t into it) and wearing my old IATSE local T-shirts to keep her from licking or chewing.  Today she’s an Aerosmith fan.

And now – the newest member of the family: BUSTER!

He is all that his name implies. He is also adorable, and he likes my socks a little too much. He is not helping Maggie remain chill.

I’m in the midst of my second to last round of finals, applying for bar fitness, and all kinds of other nonsense involved in becoming a legal lawyer, and. . .is this a music blog, or what? Yes.

We will be playing Winter Soulstice 2010 on December 11th at 7:30 in the Atlanta Room.  Come out hear the good stuff!
