We wondered that as well - like maybe they were in their I-had-to-grow-up-and-get-a-job clothes, but they weren't necessarily older than the previous crowd, just shinier.

I love the feedback. Must revisit Portland soon. About those shiny business people and tourists at Stumptown: are they perhaps scruffy bikers and downtown punks in costume?

He did, didn't he? He didn't want to get out again, either. He just sat there with the door open while I talked to his owner.

Definitely.

Though I might argue with the "exquisite" part. Some days I love it - it seems full of life and motion. Other days, it's suffocating and kinda nasty. But never boring.

It gives a greater understanding, doesn't it, to people Harper Lee, Carson McCullers, Robert Penn Warren?...and when I googled "Soutern Writers," I found this quote:

"The exquisite smell of the south, clean but funky, like a big woman." -- from Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel, 1929

I don't know what you're talking about. Paul Simon will always be one of the sexiest men alive.

. . .until he dies, I guess, then he'll just be one of the sexiest men ever. (I do admittedly have a guitar player/poet thing.)

Tiny Tim is a great example of using our societal prejudices to his advantage. But - he went at it with his tongue in his cheek. What's interesting (jarring?) about Chance and Boyle is that they're extremely earnest. There is not hint of self-mockery in what they do. Actually, as I think about it, it's pretty brave.
